Williamsburg, KY. - University of the Cumberlands (UC) recently received a generous bequest from Homer Virgil Thompson and Annette Page Thompson of Winter Haven, Florida.

Homer and Annette Thompson were an endearing and benevolent couple who were married nearly 70 years and spent their retirement years enjoying life together. Mr. Thompson, a Florida native, had an extensive military career which included the National Guard and ROTC. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Field of Artillery and worked for the Federal Communications Center for 30 years. He served in the military from 1940-1946, including service during World War II and again in the Korean War. Lt. Colonel Thompson received the Legion of Merit medal, for his service with the Army Security Agency. He was also a member of the American Legion, Elks and Masonic Lodge of Haines City, Florida.

Mrs. Thompson was an active member of Beyer Memorial United Methodist Church and Lake Region Yacht and County Club, alongside her husband. She was involved with the Ponce De Leon Chapter of the DAR and, together with her husband, was an avid amateur radio operator. She also enjoyed sports car racing, golf, international folk dancing, and traveling.

The couple, until their passing, operated the family’s citrus grove properties. This quiet gentlemen and lovely lady were an amazing couple. They maintained a strong work ethic and a heart for volunteerism. Numerous charitable organizations benefited from the Thompson’s generosity and love of their community.
