UC earns approval for Ph.D. Leadership program

Williamsburg, KY., - University of the Cumberlands (UC) has been providing educational excellence to its students since it first opened its doors for learning. New programs and enhanced technology have been introduced at UC throughout the years in order to properly and effectively educate students. UC recently earned approval for a new Ph.D. program in which students have already begun enrolling.

“Having this new Ph.D. program will help UC offer more options to students,” said UC’s Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Larry Cockrum. “There’s a demand in certain fields for people to earn a Ph.D. degree. Having a new program should also cause UC to grow in numbers.”

The Ph.D. in Leadership degree program will be consist of 66 credit hours and will begin in the fall. UC currently offers the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. The Ph.D. in Leadership is comprised of the Ed.D. and an additional six credit hours that focus on leadership theory and concepts in a non-academic environment and research methods and skills in a non-academic environment.

University of the Cumberlands’ Director of the Ed.D. Program, Professor of Higher Education and Geography, Dr. Barry Vann, explained the intense process a potential program must endure before reaching approval status. “It takes a lot of work for a program to be approved,” said Vann. “This Leadership Program has already been approved by the department, faculty, and SACCS. As a matter of fact, students have already enrolled to begin taking course this coming semester.”

Ph.D. degrees are theory based and focus mainly on research. As one of the highest possible levels of degrees to obtain, this Ph.D. Leadership program will reach beyond the student population and assist fields of business, government, education and many more.

The addition of the Ph.D. in Leadership gives UC the third doctorate level program.
