McCreary County's Renee Armstrong and Brandon Sumner, along with Katie Johnson and Alyssa Rutherford of Jellico, joined Andrew Lakatosh of South Doyle from Knoxville and Whitley County's Jessica Boyd for top awards. Justin Powers (Whitley), Aaron Bruce (McCreary), Stephanie Fowler and Jarred Bishop (South Doyle), and Amanda Baird and Stephanie Smith (Jellico) received honorable mention. Participants submitted original works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, pastels, charcoal, printmaking, sculpture and photography, which were reviewed by the UC art faculty. Department Chair Julie Wheeler expressed her pride in what area art teachers like UC graduates Wayne Hensley (Whitley County) and Lee Ann Freels (South Doyle, Knoxville, Tenn.) are accomplishing. "We have some great work being produced by these young people, and we hope to see more from them in the future," she said. "Our department is helping to train art education professionals, who then make incredible contributions to the art experience of their students."
