University of the Cumberlands’ Music Department Hosts Jazz Clinic and Concert

Participants in the 11th annual high school jazz clinic performed in concert at University of the Cumberlands.

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Department of Music at University of the Cumberlands hosted its annual high school jazz clinic on January 19 for high school band students and their directors. UC music faculty members and students worked with the participants in various aspects of performing and teaching jazz. It was an effort to assist high school students and directors with the development of skills and concepts to aid in the advancement of their own high school jazz ensembles.

Participants in the clinic included 25 students and 7 band directors from schools throughout the region including: South Laurel High School, Estill County High School, McCreary Central High School, Jackson County High School, Woodford County High School, and Harlan County High School.

“We were very pleased with this year’s event and have already begun planning for next year’s clinic,” said David Threlkeld, associate professor of music and jazz clinic coordinator.

Following the clinic, there was a concert, in which the participants demonstrated what they learned throughout the day. The jazz tunes the students played at the clinic included, “Rent Party” and “Roundhouse.”
