UC theatre department presents “The Fantasticks!”

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Theatre Arts program at University of the Cumberlands is proud to announce the opening of its spring production "The Fantasticks!." University of the Cumberlands seniors Maggie Todd and J. Lucas Waters play the roles of Luisa and Matt, young lovers who defy their parents (Jordyne Gunthert and Cary Anne Cottingham) to meet in secret, not realizing that their parents actually support their relationship. Everyone gets their happy ending, but they discover the happiness of romance novels and the happiness of everyday life are two different things. With the assistance of El Gallo (Micah Wolf) and his sidekicks (Adam Luttrell and Russell Ridenour) and a Mute (Lindsey Green), the lovers and the parents learn the difference between being in love with the idea of love and really, truly, being in love.

"The Fantasticks!," written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, has earned the distinction of being the longest running musical in the world and the longest running show in American theatre. Jones and Schmidt envisioned a minimal set design and effective use of a few props which have become identifying characteristics of the show. The musical’s score employs various styles from Broadway to blues. The opening song “Try to Remember” is recognized world-wide.

"The Fantasticks!" opens Thursday, February 25, and runs February 26, 27, and March 4, 5, 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kohn Theatre on the University campus. There will be a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. on February 28. The theatre will open half an hour before curtain. Tickets can be purchased through the UC Theatre box office at 539-4535.
