UC Participates in Special Friend Day

Dr. James Taylor spoke with the second grade enrichment class at Corbin Primary on April 20th about his traveling journeys.

Corbin, Ky. - Corbin Primary School located in Corbin, KY held Special Friend Day on April 20th and 21st. In efforts to participate with the community, several members of University of the Cumberlands (UC) athletics department along with President James H. Taylor visited the school over the two day period.

On Wednesday April 20th, President Taylor visited the 2nd grade enrichment class to speak with them about traveling around the world. Dr. Taylor spoke to the children of his journeys around the United States and all throughout Europe and Asia. The class spent 30 minutes listening and corresponding with the President.

Kelsey Eastham, of the UC volleyball team, had a great time visiting with the kids during Special Friend Day at Corbin Primary on April 21st.

“I hope that the students enjoyed the time I spent with them today as much as I enjoyed being here with them,” said Taylor. “These children have traveled a lot throughout their young lives and I hope that they continue to travel and to learn more about the world and its great wonders. I spoke about setting goals in their lives and with their bright minds; I have no doubt that they can achieve all those goals throughout their lives.”

Taylor was not the only one who enjoyed time with the children. Several UC athletes also participated in Special Friend Day by eating lunch with the children. Men’s Wrestling Assistant Coach Enock Francois (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) made a great impact on the kids. Corbin Primary teacher Judy Lewallen said, “Mr. Francois came to eat with our children and was great with the students. He was very personable and took time to speak with the children and listen to what they had to say. He really seemed to enjoy what he was doing. Being a UC alumnus myself, I am always glad to see members of the staff involved with the local communities and schools in such a positive manner.”

On Thursday April 21st, several Patriot athletes and coaches joined in again to eat lunch with the students. Patriots’ interim swim coach Edward VonHertsenberg along with his sister and swimmer Marie VonHertsenberg (Cincinnati, OH), volleyball team members Kelsey Eastham (Urbana, OH) and Cassie Kalman (Beavercreek, OH) all visited with the kids during lunch.

“It was so much fun getting to have lunch with the kids,” said Eastham. “I hope they enjoyed having us and hopefully we made their day just a little better.”

Kalman commented, “It was great getting to meet with the students today for lunch. Hopefully we made their day as much as they did ours!”

“First I would like to thank Dr. Taylor for meeting with our enrichment students,” said Corbin Primary Principal Travis Wilder. “They had a great time! As far as Special Friend Day, it is a celebration of the strong community and parental involvement in our school! Our success is intricately linked to the parents of our students and the high expectations we share to make one another the best we can be. We had approximately 600 guests each day and it was a pleasure to work with University of the Cumberlands in this adventure and we hope to be able to continue that relationship in the future.”
