Cumberlands Student Tommie Leigh Thompson Receives Award for Excellence in Elementary Education


Williamsburg, Ky – University of the Cumberlands (UC) undergraduate department of Education recognized Tommie Thompson (Pioneer, Ky) for excellence in Elementary Education during the annual Honors Day ceremonies on April 25th, 2011 in the O. Wayne Rollins Center.

Tommie is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and has a 3.8 GPA. She will graduate with honor having attained a 3.70 cumulative standing.

Included in her many academic and recreational pursuits are many hours of volunteer work with various campus ministries and the Mountain Outreach program as well as a trip to the African mission field to minister to young children.

Earlier this year, Tommie was the honored recipient of the Mary Sullivan Award which recognized Tommie for her spiritual qualities, academic work, leadership, extracurricular activities, and commitment to others.

The Education department also recognizes students excelling in middle school, secondary and special education.

She was also inducted into the J.T. Vallandingham Honor Society on Honors Day. In order to be eligible for membership, a student must have completed at least 96 semester hours as a full-time student and have a 3.5 standing or better each semester. The student must have a cumulative standing of 3.7 or better. Students who have transferred to the University have a different set of rules depending on G.P.A. and number of hours taken at UC.

Tommie was also inducted into the Who’s Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges. Who’s Who is open to juniors and seniors who have been selected by the faculty and staff. These students have excelled in one or more of the following areas: participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities; citizenship and service to the school and community; and potential for future achievement.

Located in Williamsburg, KY, University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees, including a doctorate and six master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
