The UC Book Club will next meet on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 4:30 p.m. Via Google Meet to discuss the novel The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon.

This murder mystery set in Maine in 1789 chronicles the efforts of midwife and healer Martha Ballard to bring justice for a murder when the men of the town consider the death only an accident.  This historical novel has won several prizes including an NPR Best Book of 2023 as "a most uncozy mystery that addresses the unbalanced power dynamics of men and women, rich and poor.”  The Christian Science Monitor mentions "an intriguing protagonist," "a twisty mystery," and "rich period detail."  Martha Ballard as is based on a real-life character, and the book offers much commentary about the role of women in the early days of a new nation.
