Spotlight is back and in full swing for its 6th season of production. Spotlight is a singing competition similar to American Idol, and is one of Cumberlands’ most popular events.
The next performance is Tuesday, February 6 at 8 p.m. in Gatliff Chapel on Cumberlands’ campus. From then on, performances will be held every other Tuesday until the competition’s conclusion. All are encouraged to attend and cheer on the singers as they compete.
“Everyone should come to the performances,” said Anne Russell, who won Spotlight in 2017. “You get to see really talented people perform, and it’s a unique experience you get to enjoy right here in Williamsburg.”
The singer who wins first place will be given a check for $1500. Second place will earn $500, and third place will receive $300. Over the years, Spotlight has served up some big talent, with performers earning standing ovations for their covers of songs by Adele, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, and more.
“The competition as a whole gives people a chance to see the amazing talent we have on this campus every year,” said Lisa Bartram, the director of Cumberlands’ Campus Activity Board (CAB). “And the talent we showcase isn’t just the singers, but also the students who accompany them on stage.”
For singers to move on in Spotlight, votes are cast by the competition’s judges, audience attendants, and anyone who votes online. So, anyone who watches performances in-house or votes online makes a huge difference in determining the show’s outcome.
“The more people that come to the performances, the more votes there are to propel the contestants forward,” said Russell. “So, come on out and give them your support!”
