Membership in Sigma Beta Delta is the highest national recognition a business student can receive at a college or university with a Sigma Beta Delta chapter. To be eligible for membership, a business student must rank in the top 20 percent of the junior, senior or graduate class and be invited to membership by the faculty officers.
Derek Lewis, State Representative-Elect for 90th District of Kentucky, graduated from Cumberlands with degrees in accounting and communication arts in 2009. He spoke at the ceremony, both about his time at Cumberlands and to encourage current students to extend their positive influence beyond their own personal bubbles.
“Cumberland gave me the knowledge I need to impact my community and improve the lives of others,” said Lewis. “You can take your knowledge in business and use it to get involved in something bigger than yourself. I know you already take pride in your education and that you know what it takes to succeed. I challenge you tonight to consider how you can use what you have learned to broaden your success and impact others.”
“Make a positive footprint in the world,” Lewis added. “I want people to remember the good deeds you did using your knowledge and talents. Continue to be passionate about your work, and that will spill over into the rest of your life, and into those around you.”
“We are proud and excited that the quality of our students and programs meet the standards of this prestigious organization,” said Lois McWhorter, Chair of the Hutton School of Business at UC. “We were honored to participate in the induction of our students to recognize their academic accomplishments. This is confirmation of both the quality of our business programs and our outstanding students.”
As members of Sigma Beta Delta, students have better access to internships, more networking opportunities and access to lifetime contact and information about current business issues and Sigma Beta Delta’s activities through the Aspirations Newsletter, which is published annually by the Sigma Beta Delta Society.
