Online Master's in Education Admission Requirements

Please submit a graduate application BEFORE you submit any additional admissions requirements.

Note: Students who complete the 45 hour MAEd School Counseling Degree can go on to complete the Ed.S School Counseling Degree by taking only five (5) additional courses (15 hours).

The following items are necessary for admission to the Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) program:

  • Completed Graduate Application and payment of the $30 associated fee
  • Official Transcripts must be received from all degree granting colleges/universities. Transcripts sent in from students cannot be accepted even if they are in a sealed envelope. Official transcripts can be accepted two ways:

Official transcripts must show a 3.0 cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale). If your GPA does not meet this requirement, the Graduate Admissions Committee will need to review your transcripts to determine your best option.

  • A valid Teaching License is required for both the Teacher Leader program and the Literacy Specialist program. For School Counseling, if you have a valid teaching license you will also need to provide a copy of your passing Praxis scores. Your entrance exam will be waived.
  • Submit three Letters of Recommendation - The Teacher Leader program requires one of the letters to be from a principal or superintendent. The Literacy Specialist program requires one of the letters to be from an educational professional (ie: teacher, administrator, etc.). Letters must be received directly from the person making the recommendation. Please ensure they use the same name and correct spelling of your name listed on your application (no nicknames). No recommendations from relatives please. We cannot accept letters emailed from the student.
  • The entrance exam is required for the MAEd School Counseling program for those applicants that do not already hold a valid teaching license. If you hold a valid teaching license, your entrance exam is waived.
    • For those that do not hold a valid teaching license, the GRE or Miller Analogies is required. Written verification of test registration can be accepted for conditional acceptance.
    • Required Passing Scores:
        • GRE completed after 08-01-2011:
          • Verbal – 150
          • Quantitative – 143
          • Analytical Writing – 4.0
        • GRE completed prior to 08-01-2011:
          • Verbal – 450
          • Quantitative – 490
          • Analytical Writing – 4.0
        • Miller Analogies:
          • Score - 400
  • Documentation of language fluency for non-native speakers of English, such as a score report from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores for admission are:
    • Paper-based TOEFL (PBT): 550
    • Internet-based TOEFL (IBT): 79
    • IELTS: 6
