Online Master's in Education Admission Requirements

Please submit a graduate application BEFORE you submit any additional admissions requirements.

Note: Students who complete the 45 hour MAEd School Counseling Degree can go on to complete the Ed.S School Counseling Degree by taking only five (5) additional courses (15 hours).

The following items are necessary for admission to the Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) program:

  • Completed Graduate Application and payment of the $30 associated fee
  • Submit official transcripts from all applicable colleges/universities attended; must be received directly from the issuing college or university. Transcripts sent in from students cannot be accepted even if they are in a sealed envelope. Official transcripts can be accepted two ways:

Official transcripts must show a 3.0 or above degree GPA on a 4.0 scale.

  • A valid Teaching License is required for both the Teacher Leader program and the Literacy Specialist program. 
  • Submit three Letters of Recommendation
    • The Principal program requires one of the three letters to come from your sitting Principal and the other two may come from other administrators or P-12 educators or professional staff members.
    • The Teacher Leader program requires one of the letters to be from a principal or superintendent.
    • The Literacy Specialist program requires one of the letters to be from an educational professional (ie: teacher, administrator, etc.).

Letters must be received directly from the person making the recommendation. Please ensure they use the same name and correct spelling of your name listed on your application (no nicknames). No recommendations from relatives please. We cannot accept letters emailed from the student.

  • Principal Program (ONLY) - Statement of Support
  • Principal Program (ONLY) - Statement of Skills and Understanding
  • Documentation of language fluency for non-native speakers of English, such as a score report from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the 8 International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or a report from Duolingo. This requirement is waived for students who have completed bachelor’s or master’s level coursework in the U.S. at an accredited institution. The minimum acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores for admission are: 
    • Paper-based TOEFL (PBT) - 550 
    • Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) - 79 
    • IELTS - 6
    • Duolingo - 100
  • Any international course work completed must have official transcript evaluations completed and submitted to the University by the evaluation firm. Evaluations MUST include GPA for admission.
    Approved Evaluation Firms are:
    • World Education Services (WES)
    • Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
    • International Education Research Foundation (IERF)
    • Educational Perspectives (EP)
    • SpanTran

Continuous Assessment for MAEd  Principal Only:
Admission to University

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
  • Qualify for KY teaching certificate
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Three years of full-time teaching experience
  • Valid Teaching Certificate

Admission to EPP

  • Signed Kentucky Code of Ethics           
  • Signed UC Character and Fitness         
  • UC Contract of Understanding
  • Written statement documenting skills and understandings in specific areas
  • Statement of Support from a School District signed by the Superintendent/Designee
  • Completion of Pre-test during first course

Admission to Capstone

  • GPA 3.0
  • Two Favorable Disposition Assessments
  • Application to Enroll in Capstone Course

Exit Requirements

  • Thirty (30) hours of 600 Level courses
  • At least twenty-one (21) hours completed at University of the Cumberlands
  • Successful Capstone Project
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0  
  • Two more Favorable Disposition Assessments (4 total)    
  • Completion of 165 Field and Clinical Experience Hours
  • Six (6) year time limit not exceeded
  • Application for Graduation submitted
  • Professional Portfolio submitted
  • Completion of Program Post-test

Required for Certification

  • CA-1 Submitted
  • Passing Score on EPSB Required Exam
