The UC Book Club will next meet on Wednesday, March 11, at 4:30 via Google Meet to discuss The Director by Daniel Kehlmann. A has-been Hollywood director returns to his native Austria during World War II to take care of his elderly mother; however, he winds up making what Amazon calls "a pact with the devil" when he receives an offer that could rejuvenate his career but at a terrible price. The novel is based loosely on the life of G. W. Pabst and is included on The New York Times list of the 10 Best Books of 2025. The Wall Street Journal calls the book "'nothing short of brilliant.'" David Denby in The New Yorker describes the novel as "'[a] sorrowful fable of artistic and moral collapse, but also . . . composed with entrancing freedom, even bravura . . . [b]y the leading German novelist of his generation."
