Shotwell will step into the EVP role following Dr. Quentin Young’s appointment as president-elect.

University of the Cumberlands is pleased to announce that Chris Shotwell has been named executive vice president of finance. He originally joined the university as vice president of finance and now steps into the EVP role following Dr. Quentin Young’s appointment as president-elect. Shotwell will continue overseeing the university’s financial operations while assuming broader responsibilities related to institutional planning and strategic initiatives.

In his expanded position, Shotwell leads key areas including financial planning and analysis, risk management, investment oversight, and business services. His appointment ensures continued alignment between the university’s mission and its financial strategy.

“Every decision we make at Cumberlands is guided by our mission to provide affordable, accessible education rooted in excellence and service,” said Dr. Larry L. Cockrum, president of the university. “Chris brings a steady hand and a clear vision to our financial operations. His leadership helps ensure we remain financially strong and mission-focused as we continue investing in our students.”

Shotwell brings extensive experience in higher education finance from his previous roles at the University of Kentucky, the University of Tennessee, and Georgetown College. Most recently, he served as chief business officer for the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, overseeing business services, budget management, compliance, and internal controls. At the University of Kentucky, he held positions including director of business operations, director of financial operations, and assistant budget director. He began his career in higher education at Georgetown College as a staff accountant.

“I am honored to serve the university in this expanded role,” said Shotwell. “Cumberlands is an institution that not only talks about access and affordability—it acts on it. I look forward to continuing to support our students by ensuring that every financial decision reflects the heart of our mission.”

Shotwell earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Morehead State University. He and his wife, Tammie, have three children and four grandchildren. Outside of work, he enjoys attending sporting events, traveling, golfing, hiking, and spending time with family. Chris and Tammie look forward to becoming further engaged in campus life and continuing their service to the students of Cumberlands.
