Mission and Goals

University of the Cumberlands’ Allied Health degree programs are designed to give students the technology and practical skills and tools they need to pursue a wide variety of careers in allied health fields. They are purposefully designed toward today’s business needs in the allied health field. Graduates of our program will be able to:

  • Integrate knowledge from behavioral and medical sciences as a basis for allied health practice.
  • Advocate for patients and families in ways that promote growth as diverse human beings
  • Demonstrate administration skills and management processes within the interdisciplinary health care field
  • Reflect attributes such as integrity, responsibility, commitment to evidence-based practice, caring attitude, and provision of safe, quality care for patients of diverse populations

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE IN Applied Science in Allied Health?

Depending on your relevant industry experience, your campus-based degree in allied health will give you the training and confidence you need to pursue a number of healthcare career opportunities, including positions as a:

MEDICAL ASSISTANTS1

From administrative services to patient intake and routine diagnostic procedures, your degree program will give you the skills you need to help others get the care and help they need in medical and clinical settings. In 2021, the median annual pay for medical assistants came in at $37,190 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which also projects an 18 percent increase by 2030 in the need for these critical medical facilitators.

MEDICAL RECORDS AND HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNICIANS2

Interested in a non-medical healthcare career? One where you still play a vital part in helping others get the care they need? Take it to a more technical level with a career as a medical records and health information technician. In 2021, they averaged $45,240 annually. The BLS also projects an 9 percent increase in the need for these professionals by 2030.

MEDICAL AND HEALTH SERVICES MANAGER3

Use your allied health degree to pursue a career planning, directing and coordinating the behind-the-scenes work required to keep medical practices and healthcare providers going strong as a medical and health services manager. In 2021, the median annual pay for these professionals came in at $101,340 per year, according to the BLS, which also projects an 32 percent increase by 2030 in the need for these critical medical managers.

HEALTH EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS4

As a professional health educator or community health worker, you’ll help promote wellness and better health throughout whole communities. In 2021, these community-minded health workers averaged $48,860 annually. The BLS also projects an 17 percent increase in the need for these professionals by 2030.

Requirements for an Applied Science in Allied Health Degree

The curriculum for both the associate-level or bachelor-level applied science degree will cover a number of essentials and technical areas within allied health. From core courses that offer a deeper understanding of foundational health issues to electives with hands-on clinical requirements, you will get the education you need to succeed.  Coursework for your applied science degree can include:

  • Functional Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Foundations of Health Service
  • Survey of Human Services
  • Medicaid Nurse Aid
  • Medical Terminology
  • Ethics in Health Care
  • Basic Psychology
  • Human Resource Management

Bachelor of Applied Science in Allied Health 

Both our Associate of Applied Science in Allied Health and our Bachelor of Applied Science in Allied Health will give you the tools you need to:

  • Combine your behavioral and medical science knowledge bases to grow your allied health practice skills
  • Become the advocate patients and their families need in the system
  • Manage processes and tasks within the healthcare field

To earn the bachelor’s degree in applied science from University of the Cumberlands, each student must complete at least 120 semester hours:

  • 30 semester hours required in the sections of General Education
  • 36 semester hours in Core Requirements
  • 18-21 semester hours in Minor
  • 33-36 semester hours in Elective Courses

To earn the associate degree in applied science from University of the Cumberlands, each student must complete at least 60 semester hours:

  • 21 semester hours required in the sections of General Education
  • 18 semester hours required in Core Requirements
  • 21 semester hours required from Elective Courses
