What Might Have Been Missed on a Campus Tour

Cumberlands’ Admissions Ambassadors work hard to make sure they fit everything they possibly can into a few short hours, but there are some things they don’t always cover. Let's dive into what you might have missed on your tour!

Honor Societies
Many majors have honor societies that can help students become better involved in their major and can look good on grad school applications. These societies are intended for upperclassmen, and most include credit and GPA requirements. For more information on the honor society in your major, check out https://www.ucumberlands.edu/student-life/clubs-organizations.

Work Study
For those who are looking for a job in college, there are two types of work studies offered by the school. Federal work studies are based on financial need as determined by the FASFA, and presidential work studies are funded by Cumberlands and are based on merit. Work study opportunities prioritize student’s schoolwork more than other jobs, allow students to work without leaving campus, and often offer more flexible work hours. Participating is a great way to gain professional experience to add to your resume!

Community Outreach
UC has two main community outreach programs that students can be involved in:

-Campus Ministries: this is an organization on campus that does evangelical work, discipleship events, and service projects. One example of their work is, on Wednesdays, they work alongside local churches to help reach children in the community with the gospel. They provide games and snacks and teach children about the Bible.

-Mountain Outreach: this is an organization that works to meet the physical and spiritual needs of Southeastern Kentucky through home repair, adding accessibility features such as ramps to homes, partnering with other community organizations, and engaging in disaster relief efforts.

There are also many other programs that students help with as a part of UC Engage, which is a class that every student is enrolled in until they are a senior. It requires one service project per semester but has no lectures or traditional homework. There are many options for these service projects, like the Corbin Backpack Program, Cumberland Falls Clean Up, or Senior Bingo.

Connection
It’s important for students to connect with and learn about the area they are living in. There are many ways to do so! Here are a few suggestions:

-Looking for Cumberland Fall’s famous moonbow.

-Stopping at local establishments, like London’s Southern Sips and Sweets or Moonbow Mercantile in downtown Williamsburg.

-Going to local events like the Daniel Boone Festival in Barbourville or Old Fashion Days in Williamsburg. Both are vendor events that feature local food, artists, and music!

Many students also get involved by visiting churches in the area. Three options close to campus that students often attend are Immanuel Baptist Church, Cornerstone Community Church, and Main Street Baptist Church.

And much, much more!
Being a Cumberlands student is an indescribable, incredible experience! Okay, that’s dramatic. But truthfully, there are so many things to know, things to do, and opportunities to take advantage of when you’re a student at UC. So, it’s hard to fit it all into just one tour or just one blog! So, just keep reading these blogs! Maybe one day we’ll get it all covered??
