Brief Background:
Dr. Scott is a passionate, engaging, award-winning, and skilled academic with business experience and a proven track record of inspiring students inside and outside the classroom. He received the Accounting Educator of the Year award from the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs in 2018. That same year, while serving as Marian University’s Accounting Program Director, he received that institution’s Social Justice Award for service to the community.

Serving the profession, he presented the keynote at the 5th Global Academic Champion Forum co-sponsored by the AICPA & CIMA on 3/14/23. He also serves on the Executive Board of the South Carolina Association of Accounting Educators (SCAAE) and represents the South Carolina Association of CPAs (SCACPA) at the FMU campus as a Campus Champion. He is the founding advisor for FMU’s Accounting Club (AFC) and chartered the IMA chapter. 

Scott is a licensed CPA in the states of Wisconsin and South Carolina and a former Big 4 auditor (EY) with over 15 years of full-time academic experience, over 20 years of business experience, a Wharton MBA, an M. Ed. in Education Technology, and a recent AACSB doctorate in accounting (2019). He is also a Navy veteran. Scott is ready and able to hit the ground running while serving his students. He likes to integrate technologies into his classes that will benefit his students in their futures including Excel, Tableau, LinkedIn, QuickBooks, Sage 50 (formerly Peachtree), MS Dynamics SL, and ChatGPT. Even in introductory courses, he includes RPA and data analytics conversations along with ESG and DEI&B exposure.

Scott published two journal articles in 2022 in Public Organization Review focusing on social capital and financial health/vulnerability in the nonprofit environment. He co-authored a 2023 article accepted in the AAA’s Issues in Accounting Education (4/18/23) titled “The ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence Chatbot: How Well Does It Answer Accounting Assessment Questions?” He was published in the June 1, 2023, edition of the Journal of Accountancy discussing the application of ChatGPT. Most recently, he, together with three other accounting colleagues (Laurie Burney, Kim Church, and Mfon Akpan) was featured in the August Education Issue of the IMA’s Strategic Finance Magazine, published August 7, 2023, which was released while Scott was presenting and moderating at the 2023 CTLA and AAA meetings in Denver. He is the author of the book Your COMPLETE Guide to SUCCEEDING with LinkedIn. He has also been retained by a publisher to publish a textbook titled ChatGPT and the Accountant: Transforming the Financial World Through AI. His LinkedIn monthly newsletter, Career Capsule, found at https://tinyurl.com/CareerCapsuleNewsletter, first published in December 2022, has attracted over 5,000 regular subscribers. 

Numerous keynotes and presentations have been conducted for local and international organizations in 2023 including The American Institute of CPA’s (AICPA) 5th Global Academic Champion Forum - Virtual (keynote), Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) National Conference - Minneapolis, National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Conference - Orlando, IMA Carolina’s Regional Conference - Myrtle Beach, American Accounting Association (AAA) Spark Conference - Virtual, Miles Education – Virtual, South Carolina Association of Accounting Educators – Columbia, South Carolina Association of CPAs Spring Splash Conference - Charleston. Maryland Career Development Association (MCDA) - Virtual, the South Carolina Association of Colleges and Employers (SCACE) - Columbia (keynote), the FMU Teaching and Learning Seminar: Panel of 3 - Florence, the Florence Rotary Club, the American Accounting Association’s (AAA) Annual Meeting and the Conference on Teaching and Learning in Accounting (CTLA) – Denver. Additional CPE-approved presentations for multiple state CPA societies and other organizations are scheduled for the Fall of 2023. Scott will also be presenting at the West Virginia Council of Accounting Educators 20th Annual Educator’s Conference 9/28-9/30/23 in Morgantown, WV.
