University of the Cumberlands Joins National Dialogue on Advancing AI Education and Workforce Readiness

Dr. Machica McClain, Dean of Cumberlands’ School of Computer and Information Science, represented the university at the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot Virtual Roundtable. She emphasized UC’s commitment to advancing AI education across all degree levels and aligning with NAIRR’s mission to expand access to AI resources. The discussion highlighted UC’s growing role in shaping how institutions prepare students to lead in an AI-driven future.

"It means a great deal to me, both personally and professionally, to be part of a national conversation on artificial intelligence education and workforce development," said Dr. Machica McClain, Dean of the School of Computer and Information Science at University of the Cumberlands. "Cumberlands — a beacon hidden among the mountains — now has a seat at the table alongside large, innovative institutions. It’s an opportunity for us to grow, collaborate, and showcase who we are."

Dr. McClain recently participated in the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot Virtual Roundtable, a key event focused on expanding access to AI resources and research infrastructure across the United States. The roundtable featured four primary areas of discussion:

  • Building and Implementing Effective AI Educational Resources
  • Increasing Capacity to Produce Graduates with AI Knowledge and Skills
  • Expanding Access to AI Education for All
  • Integrating AI Across Disciplines at Research-Emerging Institutions

Representing Cumberlands in a national forum dedicated to AI curriculum development in higher education, Dr. McClain selected the fourth discussion topic: AI + X at Research-Emerging Institutions with Large Computing Programs.

"My key takeaway is that many institutions are still exploring how to embed AI meaningfully into their curriculum across all levels," she said. "I learned that Cumberlands is among a small number of universities offering artificial intelligence programs at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels — a full spectrum that positions our students for real-world success."

Dr. McClain also noted that many academic leaders were unaware of the AI-related resources offered through NAIRR, which supports institutions aiming to build or enhance their AI or computing programs.

"At University of the Cumberlands, we are committed to developing practical, future-ready programs that give our students the tools they need to thrive in today’s data-driven world," said Dr. McClain. "That mission closely mirrors NAIRR’s efforts to democratize AI access across institutions of all sizes."

By participating in this national roundtable, Cumberlands not only gained insights into the evolving AI landscape but also contributed a voice from an institution deeply rooted in student-focused, accessible education.

"It was a joy to discuss how AI is transforming our world — and more importantly, how we can prepare our students to help lead that transformation," Dr. McClain added. "I believe Cumberlands is — and will continue to be — a place that shapes tomorrow’s leading innovators in artificial intelligence and beyond."
