Finding a church family as a college student
College is the first time that many students choose a church on their own. This can be an overwhelming experience, especially for students who don’t know very many people or anything about the churches in the area. However, these practical tips can help.
Campus Ministries & First Sunday
At Cumberlands, Campus Ministries wants to help students hoping to find a new church to attend during their time in the Burg. At the beginning of the school year, they host “First Sunday.” The goal of this event is to give students an introduction to the churches in the area so that, hopefully, attending them will feel less daunting.
Students who attend churches in the area come and essentially give a pitch for their church. They explain what they love about their church and how it is distinct from others in the area. Afterward, students have the opportunity to talk to representatives from the church if they would like more information.
First Sunday gives students a chance to see an overview of the churches in the area and get a better idea of where they would like to attend.
Visit Multiple Churches
Beyond First Sunday, the best thing to do is to try different churches until you find the right fit. A good goal is to attend at least three different local churches. This could even help you grow spiritually since you are exposing yourself to a diverse range of worship services.
Every service is different, and you will learn more about the congregation as you attend.
I would recommend giving a church more than one chance. However, the experience will be different for everyone. Some might feel an instant connection after one service; others may find it takes a while to find their church home away from home.
Pro tip: Know your beliefs and focus on finding a church that aligns with them. Taking notes throughout the sermon can help you process and remember what the pastor says so you can reflect on the church's teachings and consider whether you believe they are doctrinally sound.
Pray About It, Pivot If Needed
After you have visited different churches, it’s a good idea to pray about which one will be the best fit. The Bible tells us that our own judgment can be cloudy, so seeking God’s wisdom will allow us to make a better decision. If you do find yourself in a church that does not align with your beliefs, or if you just feel called to attend somewhere else, it is okay to start the process over again. No church is going to be perfect for everyone.
Have Faith
Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and put in the work to find a church in your new college town. Although the process can seem daunting or difficult, it is so worth it! By seeking out a new faith community, you will add individuals to your support system and stay rooted in your faith throughout your college years!
Expand on this. Make it more general and less about Campus Ministry. Maybe touch on some general anxieties around it, but follow it up with how it can be a good thing. Feel free to use the summary I wrote above as a guide of sorts for this intro paragraph.
