Practical strategies for Cumberlands students to make time for service, connect with community partners, and fulfill volunteer hour requirements without falling behind in classes.
Volunteering is more than just a checkbox on your to-do list; it’s a meaningful way to grow as a leader, make a difference in your community, and connect with others. At University of the Cumberlands, service is central to our mission, and we want to help you get the most out of your college volunteer experience.
Whether you’re wondering how to balance college classes and volunteering or how to find service opportunities that work with your schedule, you’re not alone.
Vascity Middleton, a current junior at Cumberlands and student worker in the Office of Student Affairs, offered some thoughtful advice on how to make volunteering a seamless part of college life.
Tip #1: Plan Ahead and Use Scheduled Holidays
“Look ahead in the semester and find days that we have off, such as Labor Day, Spring and Fall break,” Middleton recommends.
Instead of scrambling for volunteer hours at the end of the semester, set yourself up for success by blocking off time early. Use breaks in your schedule (like long weekends or holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day) to serve in your community. Cumberlands connects students with service opportunities across the tri-county area, making it easy to get involved.
Look at Cumberlands’ Academic Calendar to start planning ahead.
Tip #2: Plug Into Communities You’re Already Part Of
“Join church events or ask what events your friends are volunteering for on weekends,” said Middleton.
You don’t have to start from scratch. Local churches frequently host service events, and your friends might already be plugged into volunteer work. Tag along with them and expand your impact while strengthening friendships.
This approach not only makes volunteering feel less like a chore but also helps you build community both on and off campus.
Tip #3: Keep a Planner (And Use It)
“Having events in a planner helps keep things straight,” Middleton explained.
From flyers in campus buildings to email announcements and word-of-mouth invites, you’ll hear about lots of volunteer opportunities—but probably in passing. If you don’t write them down, chances are you’ll forget. Use a planner, digital calendar, or app to track upcoming events and avoid last-minute stress.
Tip #4: Think Outside the Semester
“Volunteer in the summer when classes are off to help gather more hours,” Middleton suggested.
If the academic year feels overwhelming, take advantage of summer break to earn your volunteer hours. Consider helping with local Vacation Bible Schools, community outreach programs, public libraries, or senior centers. It’s a great way to give back while easing the pressure during your busiest school months.
You Can Make It Work
Balancing volunteer work with a full college schedule isn’t always easy, but with a little planning and the right mindset, it’s absolutely doable and incredibly rewarding.
University of the Cumberlands offers support through programs like Pat Serve, which connects students, faculty, staff, and alumni with ongoing service opportunities in the tri-county area. With tools like these and peer insights like Middleton's, you can take the guesswork out of giving back.
