Cumberlands faculty lead interactive training event for Williamsburg high school students

Faculty and staff from University of the Cumberlands recently visited Williamsburg Independent School to host a “Day of Cyber” event. The program introduced students in grades 9–12 to the field of cybersecurity and raised awareness about career opportunities in the growing industry.

Kenneth Sims, professor and undergraduate chair of information technology at Cumberlands, explained that the day’s agenda featured several interactive training exercises through TryHackMe, a free online platform for learning cybersecurity using hands-on labs and walkthroughs.

“We began with general training exercises—step-by-step walkthroughs of the same kinds of tasks used in Capture the Flag competitions,” said Sims. “After lunch, the students got to attempt some of the real challenges on their own.”

Joining Sims for the event were Dr. Machia McClain and two departmental administrative assistants. The Cumberlands team guided students through the day’s activities and offered support along the way.

The event generated notable interest in the field. Sims shared that the school principal later reached out to request information on additional cybersecurity learning opportunities. Students also received details about Cumberlands’ Cyber Club and took home admissions materials as part of a gift bag they earned for completing the day’s training.

“Community outreach like ‘Day of Cyber’ is a vital part of capturing the hearts and attention of the next generation,” said Dr. McClain. “We want to continue showing high school students the endless opportunities available in cybersecurity.”

Sims and McClain hope to expand the initiative in the future. Together with their colleagues, they are exploring ways to reach more students and open doors to cybersecurity education and career pathways.
