Nursing student recognized for faith, leadership, and service to others

Cumberlands annually presents the A.T. Siler Award to one female student during her junior year who demonstrates strong Christian faith, exceptional leadership, and outstanding academic achievement.

The 2025-2026 recipient of the award is Alexis Gilcreast (Devary), a junior from Palmyra, Indiana.

Throughout her time at Cumberlands, Alexis has demonstrated her faith in every aspect of her college career, from clinical settings to residence hall communities.

On campus, Alexis serves as both a resident assistant and peer tutor. In these roles, she mentors younger students as they navigate their college journeys. Guided by her faith, she provides encouragement, support, and direction to peers facing challenges.

Academically, Alexis is pursuing a degree in nursing. When it came time to choose her field of study, the decision was an easy one.

“I have always felt called to take care of those in need,” she explained. “It is sweet to support and walk alongside patients going through some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives.”

University of the Cumberlands’ Associate Degree in Nursing program is grounded in clinical nursing fundamentals and real-world healthcare applications. Like all nursing students, Alexis participates in immersive clinical training at healthcare institutions. During one experience, her strong character and convictions gave her the courage to advocate for others during a difficult situation.

“Alexis has demonstrated very strong Christian faith and integrity as a student,” explained her faculty nominator. “When something was being managed inappropriately, she spoke up and advocated for her peers and patients. Her bravery and integrity in doing the right thing led to a positive change.”

Though Alexis has been a source of encouragement for others, she says she has also received tremendous support throughout her program. One faculty member, Grace Campbell, made a particularly meaningful impact.

“Mrs. Campbell was my first-semester nursing instructor. She made sure each student had what they needed to learn,” Alexis shared. “No matter how early the exam was, she made an effort to be at the testing center to pray for us before each test.”

Off campus, Alexis continues to nurture her faith by attending Immanuel Baptist Church, where she serves as a student leader. Through worship and fellowship, she continues to grow in her faith while encouraging fellow students to get involved and connected with the local church community.

Looking to the future, Alexis says faith will remain central to her plans. While her immediate goal is to pass the NCLEX and begin her nursing career, she hopes one day to use her degree in overseas mission work serving underserved communities.

The A.T. Siler Award recognizes students who embody the values of servant leadership and Christian character that define the Cumberlands experience. Alexis’ compassion, courage, and commitment to serving others make her a deserving recipient of this year’s honor.
