Cumberlands junior recognized for commitment to service through ROTC, academics, and campus leadership

Cumberlands annually presents the T.E. Mahan Memorial Service Award to one male student in his junior year who is expected to make an outstanding contribution to his community in the future.

The 2025–2026 recipient of the T.E. Mahan Memorial Service Award is Wendell (Jacob) Canada, a junior from Williamsburg, Kentucky.

Service is a defining feature of Jacob’s life.

As a member of Cumberlands’ Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), Jacob understands what it means to commit to serving others above self.

“Through ROTC, I’ve developed discipline, leadership, and a strong sense of service,” he said.

After graduation, Jacob plans to apply his skills in ways that serve his community.

“Upon graduation, I plan to commission into the Financial Corps of the Army National Guard and continue furthering my education by earning a graduate degree in accounting and preparing for CPA licensure so I can better serve my community."

Jacob feels prepared to take this next step thanks to his experience in Cumberlands’ accounting and finance programs. In addition to his studies, he has taken on leadership roles in the Business Club, serving as both vice president and president.

“My involvement in the Business Club has allowed me to grow as a leader and work closely with others to make a positive impact.”

While ROTC and the Business Club require a significant commitment, Jacob sees both as a natural extension of who he is.

“These opportunities have given me the chance to lead, serve, and grow in ways that align with my values."

Receiving the T.E. Mahan Memorial Service Award is a meaningful recognition of Jacob’s commitment to service, but he is quick to acknowledge those who have influenced him along the way.

“One person who has had a lasting impact on me is Dr. Jake Brock,” Jacob said. “He has been my professor since my freshman year and has invested heavily in my academic growth, always showing how much he genuinely cares about the success of his students. Through both mentorship and friendship, Dr. Brock has had a profound influence on my life, shaping me not only academically, but also spiritually and personally.”

As he looks toward his final year at Cumberlands, Jacob says he is both honored and motivated by this recognition.

“Receiving the T.E. Mahan Memorial Service Award is a meaningful honor because it reflects qualities of service that I hope to carry into my future,” he said. “This recognition encourages me to continue developing both professionally and spiritually, and it motivates me to use my education and leadership to make a positive impact in my community and beyond.”

Cumberlands looks forward to seeing what Jacob accomplishes, both in his final year and in the years ahead.
