Dr. Marcus White, a two-time Cumberlands graduate, will bring his expertise in leadership, education, and human performance to an international project focused on youth athletics and community health.
University of the Cumberlands alumnus Dr. Marcus White has been selected for a prestigious Fulbright Specialist Program award through the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
As part of the international exchange program, White will travel to Durazno, Uruguay, to collaborate with the Secretaría Nacional del Deporte on a project focused on developing school athletics, strengthening coaching practices, and encouraging lifelong physical activity.
White earned a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Cumberlands in 2022 and returned to earn a Master of Science in Health and Human Performance in 2023. Now, he sees his Fulbright project as an opportunity to bring together what he's learned about leadership, education, athletics, and human performance to make a meaningful impact.
“The Fulbright name carries tremendous history and responsibility, so being selected was meaningful to me professionally and personally,” White shared. “But after the excitement came a sense of responsibility. Someone is inviting me into their community and trusting me to contribute something useful. I don't take that lightly.”
What Is the Fulbright Specialist Program?
The Fulbright Specialist Program is an international exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State that connects U.S. academics and established professionals with institutions around the world.
Unlike longer-term Fulbright opportunities, the Specialist Program focuses on short-term, project-based exchanges lasting two to six weeks. Participants collaborate with international partners to address shared challenges, exchange knowledge, and strengthen professional and institutional relationships.
The program includes more than 160 participating countries and 24 eligible disciplines and project focus areas.
For professionals like White, the opportunity provides a platform to apply specialized expertise while gaining new perspectives through international collaboration.

How Will Dr. White Help Develop Youth Athletics in Uruguay?
White's Fulbright project focuses on the promotion and development of school athletics, drawing on his experience as an educator, leadership consultant, coach, and human performance professional.
Currently a social science teacher in public education, White has also taught at the college level in leadership, health and human performance, and education. Beyond the classroom, he works with organizations on leadership development, organizational culture, belonging, and human performance.
His academic background provides another layer of expertise.
Through his doctoral studies in leadership, White developed a deeper understanding of organizational culture, motivation, leadership systems, and how individuals function within groups. His graduate studies in health and human performance strengthened his understanding of physical activity, coaching development, and performance.
“Those areas come together directly in the work I am doing through the Fulbright Specialist Program,” he explained.
While in Uruguay, White will work closely with teachers and coaches to explore age-appropriate approaches to athletics for children and adolescents. The goal is to help develop athletic experiences that encourage young people to remain active long after their school years.
“When we talk about developing youth athletics, we aren't simply talking about teaching children how to run faster or jump farther. We are talking about creating systems, developing coaches, motivating young people, building community support, and creating environments where children want to participate and continue participating.”
That is leadership, education, and human performance working together.
Building a Culture of Physical Activity Beyond Schools
White's work will also extend beyond school athletics to explore how communities can encourage healthier, more active lifestyles.
Working with local stakeholders, he hopes to cultivate broader participation in accessible physical activities, including walking and running.
“The idea is that a sustainable culture of athletics and improved health cannot exist only within schools. When parents, teachers, coaches, and other community members participate, they can model active lifestyles while helping plant and nurture a culture of movement that can grow throughout the country.”
The project will also address coach development, parent and community engagement, sustainable athletic programming, and opportunities to expand youth participation and competition.
An important part of the experience, however, is its collaborative nature.
White has no intention of arriving with a ready-made solution and expecting his international partners to adopt it.
“The goal is not for me to arrive with a finished American program and hand it to them. It is to build something with our Uruguayan partners that fits their athletes, families, schools, communities, resources, and culture and that has the potential to continue growing long after my Fulbright work is completed.”
Ultimately, White hopes the project will help young people associate physical activity with competence, community, and enjoyment, increasing the likelihood that movement becomes a lifelong habit rather than something practiced only through organized sports.
Why Is Cultural Exchange Important to Leadership Development?
For White, the Fulbright Specialist Program is as much an opportunity to learn as it is to share his expertise.
“When you enter another culture, many of the assumptions you carry about how things 'should' be done get challenged. That makes you a better educator and, frankly, a better human being.”
Though White brings extensive academic and professional experience to the project, he recognizes that his Uruguayan partners possess knowledge, traditions, and perspectives that may challenge his own assumptions and strengthen his approach.
“Uruguay has its own sporting culture, educational traditions, community relationships, and ways of developing athletes. I want to understand those systems, see what their coaches do well, how their children respond, how communities engage with sport, and what practices I can bring back into my own teaching and coaching,” he shared. “I am going there to teach, but I am equally going there to learn.”
For White, remaining open to different perspectives is essential to effective leadership and lifelong learning.
“Good professionals collect tools,” he said. “Every international experience adds another set of tools and another way of seeing problems. I expect Uruguay will do exactly that for me.”
How Did University of the Cumberlands Prepare Dr. White for International Leadership?
Long before receiving his Fulbright award, White was already an experienced teacher, coach, athlete, Marine, consultant, and organizational leader.
But when he enrolled in University of the Cumberlands' Ph.D. in Leadership Studies program, he discovered that professional experience alone wasn't the same as understanding why certain approaches worked.
“I came to Cumberlands as a practitioner…a teacher, coach, athlete, Marine, consultant, and organizational leader…with years of experience and plenty of ideas about what worked,” he explained. “But my professors challenged me to examine those experiences more critically, connect practice with research, and sometimes question things I thought I already knew.”
That academic challenge helped reshape how he approached complex problems.
Rather than relying solely on personal experience or established methods, White learned to evaluate challenges through research, critical thinking, and the perspectives of others.
He continued building on that foundation when he returned to Cumberlands to earn his master's degree in health and human performance in 2023.
Together, those graduate experiences helped him develop an approach that connects academic research with practical application, something he now carries into classrooms, organizations, and international collaborations.
“Whether I am teaching, coaching, consulting, or working internationally, I try to bring together evidence, experience, and the perspectives of the people actually doing the work,” he explained.
His Fulbright project is a direct application of that philosophy, bringing together leadership, education, and human performance to address a real-world challenge through international partnership.
How Can Professionals Prepare for Opportunities Like the Fulbright Specialist Program?
For educators, researchers, and established professionals interested in international opportunities such as the Fulbright Specialist Program, White offers advice drawn from his own professional journey.
First, build genuine expertise.
“Don't chase the title ‘Fulbright Recipient.’ Chase meaningful work. Build alliances, question and become involved with other researchers and scholars. Become good at something that can be useful to other people.”
Second, document your work.
“Present, publish, teach, conduct research, lead projects, and develop a professional record that demonstrates what you can actually contribute.”
Third, apply.
“People eliminate themselves from extraordinary opportunities every day because they decide they aren't qualified before anyone else gets the opportunity to decide.”
Finally, White encourages professionals to approach international opportunities with humility and an understanding that meaningful collaboration requires mutual respect.
“Don't enter another country believing you are going there to save, fix, or enlighten anyone. Bring what you know. Be generous with it. Then be quiet long enough to learn what they know. That is where the real exchange begins.”
For White, that philosophy reflects both the responsibility of participating in an international exchange and the importance of remaining a lifelong learner.
