Eight students inducted into national math honor society at Cumberlands

University of the Cumberlands Kentucky Beta Chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honor society, hosted its spring induction ceremony on April 21, 2026, recognizing high-achieving students in mathematics. 

Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME) is a nationally recognized honor society dedicated to promoting excellence in mathematics among undergraduate students. Membership reflects strong academic performance, commitment to the discipline, and continued pursuit of mathematical achievement. 

Eight University of the Cumberlands students were inducted into the Kentucky Beta Chapter: 

  • Ms. Alexandra M. Buchanan of Sunbright, TN 
  • Ms. Lindsay Nicole Coughlin of Park Hills, KY 
  • Ms. Emily Rachel Gaylor of Corbin, KY 
  • Mr. Pablo López Martín of Williamsburg, KY 
  • Mr. Caleb O’Riley Poe of Owensboro, KY 
  • Ms. Ayla E. Sims of Winfield, TN 
  • Ms. Michelle Betty Weiss of Pierre, SD 
  • Mr. Larry Zackary Willis Jr. of London, KY 

In addition to the induction, chapter officers were elected for the 2026-27 school year: 

  • President: Ms. Michelle Weiss of Pierre, SD 
  • Vice President: Mr. Pablo López Martín of Williamsburg, KY 
  • Secretary: Ms. Alexandra Buchanan of Sunbright, TN 
  • Treasurer: Ms. Ayla E. Sims of Winfield, TN 

The Kentucky Beta Chapter was founded in 1993. The Cumberlands’ chapter is one of only three in Kentucky. 

To qualify for membership, students must complete at least three semesters of college coursework, rank in the top 35 percent of their class, and complete a minimum of three college-level mathematics courses, including at least one semester of calculus. Candidates must also maintain a B average or higher in all mathematics courses. 

Through organizations like Kappa Mu Epsilon, University of the Cumberlands continues to support academic excellence, student achievement, and discipline-specific recognition in fields such as mathematics.
