Dr. Emily Hopper leads statewide institutional research efforts with a student-first mindset and a data-driven vision for Kentucky’s future.

“When we imagine what is possible using the data we already have to support students more holistically, personalize pathways, and anticipate needs before they arise—the opportunities for impact are truly exciting,” said Dr. Emily Hopper.

Hopper, Director of Institutional Research at University of the Cumberlands and a proud three-time graduate of the institution, was recently appointed Secretary of the Kentucky Association of Institutional Research (KAIR).

KAIR, an extension of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR), aims to advance research and knowledge that support the planning and operation of postsecondary institutions across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

For Hopper, the appointment connects seamlessly to the work she leads at Cumberlands.

Supporting Kentucky Colleges Through Data

“In both spaces, the heart of what we do in Institutional Research/Institutional Effectiveness is service,” she explained. “Using data to support informed decision-making, strengthen institutional effectiveness, and ultimately enhance the student experience.”

As Hopper describes, the field of Institutional Research and Effectiveness centers on utilizing accurate, timely data and analysis to inform university planning, policy, and decision-making.

Under Hopper’s leadership, the Institutional Research team at Cumberlands promotes institutional integrity, supports accreditation and compliance efforts, and advances strategic initiatives. By assessing performance and measuring outcomes, the team helps align academic and administrative efforts with the university’s broader mission: student success, innovation, and operational excellence.

Advancing Institutional Research Across the Commonwealth

In her new role as KAIR Secretary, Hopper will share her insights with colleagues across the state while collaborating with partners such as the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) and the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS).

“Their statewide datasets and analytical insights help us see where students are thriving, where gaps exist, and how employment trends are shifting across the Commonwealth,” said Hopper. “This level of collaboration reinforces a shared commitment: preparing Kentucky’s learners for meaningful careers while advancing the Commonwealth’s workforce goals.”

From Cumberlands to Statewide Impact

The work Hopper leads at Cumberlands and now extends through her service with KAIR helps drive program alignment that supports strong employment outcomes and long-term economic mobility for Kentucky students.

For Hopper, the work is more than strategic—it’s personal.

“As a first-generation college student, being part of this coordinated effort is both exciting and deeply meaningful,” she shared.

Hopper’s perspective is shaped by both personal experience and professional expertise, giving her a clear sense of what’s possible when data informs action.

“We are positioned to leverage analytics to strengthen student success initiatives, identify barriers and remove them earlier, refine academic offerings in alignment with workforce needs, and provide leaders with clearer insights to guide strategic planning.”

“A few years ago, we watched advances in areas such as genetics reshape entire fields; today, the most significant breakthroughs are emerging in data—and Institutional Research is positioned at the center of that transformation.”

A Message to Aspiring Institutional Researchers

To those considering a future in Institutional Research, Hopper offers encouraging advice.

“IR is a field with a wide scope, and it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed at first; no one masters it all immediately,” she said. “Stay grounded in the why behind the work. When you keep students at the center, the learning curve feels purposeful rather than intimidating.”

Whether at Cumberlands or on the KAIR board, Hopper is helping shape a future where data drives meaningful change, and students remain the heart of every decision.
