Dr. Saika Anumula receives 2026 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award for research advancing AI-enabled cybersecurity governance and compliance.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming cybersecurity, but many organizations still struggle to implement AI responsibly while meeting evolving regulatory requirements. University of the Cumberlands graduate Dr. Saika Anumula is helping address that challenge through internationally recognized research.

Dr. Anumula, a recent graduate of the Ph.D. in information technology program at University of the Cumberlands, has received the 2026 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award from the International Universal Innovators Leadership Awards (IUILA) in partnership with Springer Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems (LNNS) and a coalition of leading academic institutions across Europe.

The award recognizes doctoral research demonstrating exceptional academic excellence, innovation, and measurable contributions to industry. Dr. Anumula's dissertation, “Navigating the Complexities and Challenges of AI-Enabled Cybersecurity Governance and Compliance,” was selected from a competitive international field of submissions.

Her research explores one of today's most pressing technology challenges: How can organizations successfully adopt artificial intelligence while maintaining strong cybersecurity governance, regulatory compliance, and operational security?

"I was genuinely humbled when I learned about the award," Dr. Anumula said. "The IUILA-2026 recognition is particularly meaningful because it represents evaluation by an international jury across a global pool of nominees—it's validation that our work on AI implementation challenges resonates not just locally, but internationally."

Today, Dr. Anumula serves as a Security Engineer at Amazon, where she works at the intersection of cybersecurity and emerging technologies. Her professional experience inspired her doctoral research after observing a growing gap between the promise of AI-powered security tools and organizations' ability to implement them effectively.

"I pursued a Ph.D. at the University of the Cumberlands because of its commitment to bridging theory and practice," she explained. "The program's emphasis on applied research meant I could investigate these real-world implementation challenges while maintaining academic rigor. The flexibility of the program also allowed me to continue my professional growth while pursuing my doctoral research."

Rather than focusing solely on new AI technologies, Dr. Anumula examined the organizational, technical, and regulatory factors that determine whether AI-enabled cybersecurity initiatives succeed.

Using qualitative research, she studied the barriers cloud service providers face when implementing AI-driven cybersecurity solutions, including:

  • Organizational readiness
  • Legacy system integration
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Workforce development
  • AI governance and risk management

Her findings provide evidence-based strategies that help organizations responsibly integrate artificial intelligence into existing cybersecurity frameworks while reducing implementation risk.

"The inspiration for my research came from observing a critical gap in how Cloud Service Providers approach AI integration," she said. "While literature emphasizes AI's potential for enhanced threat detection and regulatory compliance, CSPs face significant real-world barriers that delay or complicate adoption."

As AI adoption accelerates across industries, Dr. Anumula believes organizations increasingly need practical frameworks, not simply new technologies, to implement AI effectively. Her research contributes to that growing body of knowledge by helping cybersecurity leaders, cloud service providers, consultants, and technology vendors move beyond asking whether AI should be adopted and instead focus on how to implement it successfully.

"My research is helping the industry move from aspirational AI adoption to systematic, successful integration," she said. "By providing evidence-based insights grounded in real practitioner experiences, the research is helping organizations make informed decisions about adopting these critical security technologies."

Dr. Anumula’s recognition also highlights University of the Cumberlands' ability to prepare scholar-practitioners whose research addresses complex industry challenges while creating meaningful impact beyond academia.

Dr. Anumula credits the mentorship she received throughout her doctoral journey for helping transform an emerging industry problem into award-winning research.

"My dissertation chair, Dr. John Hannon, and committee members Dr. Clifford Butler and Dr. Jordon Shaw have been instrumental in my success," she said. "The support structure at Cumberlands emphasizes that doctoral research is a collaborative journey, not a solitary pursuit, and I'm grateful for the mentorship and resources that made this possible.”

For current and future doctoral students, Dr. Anumula encourages choosing research topics that solve real problems rather than simply filling gaps in academic literature.

"Choose a research problem rooted in real-world challenges—something practitioners genuinely struggle with and need guidance on, maintain strong connections to your industry throughout your doctoral work, and never underestimate the value of feedback from your committee, peers, and the people you study,” she said. “The most rewarding— it's knowing that your work has helped practitioners navigate real challenges more successfully and has contributed something meaningful to how your field solves problems.”
