You've earned this!
At University of the Cumberlands, we strive to help make your education affordable. We offer a number of scholarships that are available to full-time undergraduate students, excluding online students, and are renewable for up to 4 years. We also list external scholarships that all students can apply for, regardless of their academic level or whether they're taking classes in-seat or online. Scholarship amounts range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Students may qualify for only one scholarship in the academic category.
For most scholarships, our Priority Filing Date for applications is February 1st; however, applications submitted after that date may be considered on a case-by-case basis. All applicants for scholarships should be accepted for admission prior to scholarship application submission and, in general, should have filed the FAFSA.
Academic Scholarships
We aim to make education at Cumberlands even more affordable than it already is by decreasing student dependency on federal loans and reducing the financial burden of earning a college degree. As part of our Cumberlands Commitment, and beginning in the fall of 2024, the University will introduce new measures to reduce students’ out-of-pocket costs.
This new program will offer on-campus undergraduate students a combination of scholarship funds and forgivable, zero-interest loans. Our goal with the program is to decrease total out-of-pocket costs with students paying, on average, no more than $2,000 per semester to attend Cumberlands.
- Students must complete the FAFSA as soon as the filing window opens in December
- Cumberlands will issue financial aid packages to students based on FAFSA information
- Students will continue to contribute state and federal financial aid to the cost of their education
- Students that have more than $2,000 per semester ($4,000 per year) out-of-pocket will automatically be offered the Cumberlands Commitment program as part of their financial aid package
- Enrolled students that maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) will remain in the program and have applicable institutional loans forgiven each semester
- Students must complete the FAFSA each year to maintain eligibility
Presidential scholarships are available for first-time freshmen based on high school GPA. To qualify, a student must have at least a 2.5 or higher GPA when applying at the university. Presidential scholarship awards range in amounts and are renewable each year as long as a student maintains Satisfactory Academic Progress. There is no application, and scholarships will automatically be awarded once the student has been accepted and completed the FAFSA.
*Scholarships may be adjusted or removed based on financial need.
To be eligible, students must have completed the Governor’s Scholars Program the summer prior to their intended enrollment year and complete the form below to upload their certificate of completion. Two spots are held annually on a first come, first served basis once enrollment deposit is paid for first-time freshman students. This scholarship covers tuition and fees up to $9,875 for four consecutive years of undergraduate main-campus enrollment and is not stackable with other institutional academic scholarships. Failure to complete the FAFSA application may result in loss of scholarship.
Financial need may be considered when evaluating applicants. The Financial Aid Office reserves the right to adjust all scholarships to stay within Title IV guidelines, state awarding guidelines, and campus policy.

The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation offers $24,000 James Madison Graduate Fellowships to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. Fellowship applicants compete only against other applicants from the states of their legal residence. As funding permits, the Foundation plans to offer one fellowship per state per year. James Madison Fellowships were created by Congress to honor James Madison's legacy and Madisonian principles by providing support for master’s degrees that focus on the Constitution – its roots, its formation, its principles, and its development. The benefits of the fellowship program are manifold and lasting. While in graduate school, Fellows will gain a deeper understanding of the principles of constitutional government, which they then impart to their students. In the process, they form professional ties that can significantly influence their teaching aspirations. In this way, the James Madison Fellowships ensure that the spirit and practical wisdom of the Constitution will guide the actions of future generations of American citizens.

The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. The Coolidge may be used by recipients at any accredited college or university in the United States. Anyone of any background, pursuing any academic discipline of study, may apply to this non-partisan, need-blind, program.
Students apply for the Coolidge Scholarship during their junior year of high school. Finalists are flown in for a finalist weekend at the Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth Notch, Vermont where they interview with the Coolidge Scholars Finalist Jury. Recipients of the Coolidge Scholarship are notified of their award late in their junior year, before college application (note: current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Finalists who are not named Coolidge Scholars are eligible to receive a smaller, one-time, college scholarship.
Calvin Coolidge worked hard in academics; the young New Englander’s only sport was public speaking, often on public policy. The main criterion that distinguishes Coolidge Scholars therefore is academic excellence. Secondary criteria include: demonstrated interest in public policy; an appreciation for the values Coolidge championed; as well as humility and service.
The summer before their senior year of high school, newly-selected Coolidge Scholars spend several orientation days at the picturesque birthplace of the President, Plymouth Notch, Vt. There scholars get to know Coolidge and his world, and help the Coolidge Foundation oversee its formidable debate programs. Scholars return to Plymouth Notch for a week each summer while in college.
Although only a few students are named Coolidge Scholars each year, one hundred of the top Coolidge Scholarships applicants are named “Coolidge Senators.” Coolidge Senators are invited, all-expenses-paid, to participate in the Senators Summit that takes place each summer. At the Summit, learn about President Coolidge and his world and meet other high achieving students from across the country.
Eligibility Requirements:
- 2025-26 Coolidge Scholarship applicants must intend to enroll full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university as an undergraduate for the first time in fall 2027. That is to say, students in their junior year of high school, or the equivalent if home schooled, are eligible to apply. (Students who are currently high school juniors but take some courses at a local college are indeed eligible to apply for the Coolidge Scholarship.)
- 2025-26 Coolidge Scholarship applicants must be citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States of America by the 2025-26 scholarship deadline.

The Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund (SCSF) was founded on the belief that any motivated individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education. By removing some of the financial burdens associated with going to, surviving in, and graduating from college, the SCSF plays a vital role in increasing college access and success for many motivated yet underserved youth and young adults. The SCSF provides individual grants, paid directly to the educational institution, to every student who qualifies and reapplies yearly, from admission to graduation. The grant can be used to cover tuition expenses and related supplemental educational expenses such as books, lab fees, travel and select costs of living. All Shawn Carter Scholars are required to “give back” by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars. One hundred (100) Colleges, Universities, and Trade Schools are attended each year by SCF scholars across the U.S.
The Shawn Carter Foundation, co-founded by Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter and his mother, Hon. Dr. Gloria Carter, has been committed to bridging the opportunity gap that exists across the education system for more than two decades.
We firmly believe that nothing should prevent any individual from reaching their highest potential. Since its inception, The Foundation has provided college scholarships for young people who have talent and drive but due to mitigating circumstances, their grade point averages fall below the minimum to qualify for support at other foundations and institutions.
The students who receive support from the Shawn Carter Foundation are high school and college-age students facing incredible difficulties that distract them from functioning in school. They represent an array of backgrounds: some come from single parent households and some are single parents themselves, some have grown in the foster care system or have faced homelessness, many are raising younger siblings or providing care for a family member with mental or physical health challenges, some have been victims of abuse, and the majority come from families that are simply trying to make ends meet due to poverty.
These circumstances should not prevent students who want to go to college, pursue their dreams, make a better life for themselves, and give back to their communities. It is the Shawn Carter Foundation’s responsibility and honor to open the doors of education, travel, enlightenment and experiences to those that may never have thought it possible. Everyone possesses a genius level talent and The Shawn Carter Foundation’s mission is to give a platform to achieve greatness.

Bill Daniels was Born in Greeley, Colorado in 1920, Bill grew up in Omaha and Council Bluffs before moving to Hobbs, New Mexico during the Great Depression. His unruly teen years led him to New Mexico Military Institute, where he embraced discipline, became a Golden Gloves champion, and developed leadership skills. As a naval officer and fearless combat pilot in WWII, Bill earned the Bronze Star for heroic rescues aboard the USS Intrepid. He later trained Navy pilots during the transition to jet aircraft and retired as a decorated Commander. Bill’s career began in insurance, but a chance encounter with television in 1952 sparked his next venture—building Casper, Wyoming’s first cable system. From there, he became a pioneer in cable television, founding Daniels & Associates and turning Denver into the industry’s capital.
A lifelong sports fan, Bill helped pioneer sports broadcasting and invested in boxing, car racing, and pro teams like the Utah Stars and LA Lakers. He also served as president of the American Basketball Association and co-founded the United States Football League (USFL). Bill believed in a “hand-up,” not a hand-out. He raised $300,000 for education via a record-setting global flight and opened his home, Cableland, to nonprofits before donating it to the City of Denver. He founded Young Americans Bank, the world’s only bank for kids, and helped shape ethics education at the University of Denver, which renamed its business school in his honor.Bill didn’t just donate. He showed up, listened, and connected. He devoted his final years to establishing the Daniels Fund, guiding its mission and direction. When he passed in 2000, his estate created one of the region’s largest private foundations.Today, the Daniels Fund carries forward his legacy through grants, scholarships, and its ethics initiative, supporting people and communities across Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.
Daniels Scholars are selected for strength of character, leadership potential, commitment to service, and academic promise. Scholars uphold the values Bill Daniels cherished: ethics and integrity, honesty, respect, reliability, entrepreneurial spirit, belief in free enterprise, patriotism, and excellence. The Daniels Scholarship is a four year, annually renewable scholarship. The Daniels Scholarship Program is one of the most comprehensive and generous college scholarships in the country. It helps make college possible for high-achieving, values-driven students in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Scholars receive up to a full cost of attendance scholarship and can attend the college or university of their choice throughout the country.Daniels Scholars can attend any accredited nonprofit college or university in the United States. If you attend a non-partner school within Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming, you will receive up to $7,500 per year.
Daniels Scholars are known for their strong character, leadership, and commitment to service. United by shared values, they are tomorrow’s leaders committed to making a difference. Established in 1942, Regeneron STS is the oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors, identifying future leaders in STEM and providing an important forum for original research that is recognized and reviewed by a national jury of professional scientists. Started in 1942 as the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, Regeneron STS recognizes and empowers our nation’s most promising young scientists who are developing ideas that could solve society’s most urgent challenges. Alumni have made extraordinary contributions to science and have earned many of the world’s most distinguished science and math honors, including thirteen Nobel Prizes and eleven National Medals Of Science. Annually, nearly 2,500 high school seniors from around the country accept the challenge of conducting independent science, math or engineering research and completing an entry for the Regeneron Science Talent Search. The competition recognizes 300 student scholars and their schools each year and invites 40 student finalists to Washington, D.C. to participate in final judging, display their work to the public, and meet with notable scientists and government leaders. Each year, Regeneron STS scholars and finalists compete for $3.1 million in awards. The first place prize is $250,000—the largest scientific prize available to a high school student in the United States—with prizes awarded at all stages of the competition.
300 Regeneron STS Scholars chosen from all STS entrants receive $2,000. In addition to the scholar award money, each scholar’s school will receive an award of $2,000 for each scholar named. This school award recognizes excellence in teaching and school support of individual student researcher, and is to contribute to excellence in science, math, or engineering education at the recipient school. In the case of home schooling, the award will be given to an affiliated school or school district of the home school or a qualified designee, after consultation with the Regeneron STS director.
40 Regeneron STS Finalists chosen from the 300 Scholars receive $25,000 (minimally) and a week in Washington, DC. In March, finalists travel to Washington, DC for the Regeneron Science Talent Institute. While in Washington, finalists display and present their research to thousands of visitors, many of them important figures in the government and scientific communities, promoting independent, inquiry-based science research. On the basis of interviews with the judging panel and presentation of their research, 10 top award winners are selected, including the top winner, who is provided with a $250,000 award. Finalists who place in the top ten receive awards ranging from $40,000 for tenth place to $250,000 for first place. The 40 Regeneron Science Talent Search finalists will participate in an in-person competition in March 2027.
A panel of judges representing expertise across the disciplines of entry convenes and selects 40 finalists from among the scholars. In addition to an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC,. Finalists receive a minimum award of $25,000. Top ten award amounts are as follows:
